Ghazal Geshnizjani
Ghazal Geshnizjani is a theoretical physicist specializing in cosmology. She earned her PhD from Brown University and, after her postdoctoral fellowships, worked for over a decade as research faculty in Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo before joining Perimeter Institute in 2023 as teaching faculty.
Her research explores gravity and the beginning and evolution of the universe. She was part of the team that discovered the Cuscuton theory of gravity, a minimal extension of Einstein’s theory. Ghazal has extensive teaching experience in mathematics, relativity, and cosmology, and has supervised many students. She has organized major scientific programs and conferences across Canada and is one of the founders of the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics. She has served as Chair of Women in Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, launching initiatives such as the Directed Reading Program to promote an inclusive environment for women+ undergraduate students and to support graduate student involvement in leadership roles. She is also a founder and Deputy Director of the Supernova Foundation, a global mentoring program for women+ in physics. Beyond academia, she is active in outreach and is the author of the children’s book Bella the Black Hole, which introduces young readers to black holes and stellar evolution.
