Dorothy Byers
Dorothy Byers is a nationally respected education and community leader with extensive experience in community engagement, governance, and youth workforce development. Her work is grounded in a deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and building strong talent pipelines, particularly for young women and underrepresented groups in STEM. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for FIRST Robotics Canada and is a Member of the Board of Governors at Royal St. George’s College. A long-time educator and advocate for girls in science and technology, Dorothy held senior leadership roles at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School, including Vice-President of Innovation and Implementation and Head of School. During her tenure, she co-founded SWAT 771, Canada’s first all-female high-school robotics team. Under her leadership, SWAT 771 earned the FIRST Engineering Inspiration Award, and an estimated 85–90% of participating students pursued STEM-related fields after graduation. With more than 25 years of service to FIRST Robotics, Dorothy has mentored students, guided programs, and championed experiential learning that bridges education and industry. She is the recipient of the FIRST Hero Award and the City of Mississauga Civic Award of Recognition.
